The Portarlington Golf Club, like all in our community, is itching to get back to a sense of “normality” in life.

We’ve run great tournaments in the past, so we thought there’s no better way to instil a little confidence about 2022 than to run a Pro-Am during our gorgeous summer. And there’s simply nothing in golf like watching players you’ve become so familiar with through the years taking on a course with which you’re well versed.

Throw in the support of our wonderful naming rights sponsor Wayne Dixon and his team at Barwon Cleaning Supplies, and here’s the final product … The Barwon Cleaning Supplies Portarlington Legends Pro-Am on 28 February is the start of the 2022 PGA Legends Tour.

It will bring names you know and love to our backyard, not to mention your chance to walk – or even play – our fairways with them. Superstar Peter Senior, Vic Open champ Richard Green, PGA Tour winner Andre Stolz and Open Championship runner-up Mike Harwood are just some of the myriad stars who’ll tee up at Portarlington.

Legend does Port homework

There’ll be some BIG names heading around our little links in coming weeks with the Barwon Cleaning Supplies Portarlington Legends Pro-Am around the corner on 28 February.

And that trend started today with no less a legend than 1983 Australian Open champion and 1989 runner-up Peter Fowler passing by to do his “homework” on the course.

Fowler, a winner in Europe and Asia and of the World Cup individually and for Australia alongside Wayne Grad in 1989, was taken by the condition of the Portarlington layout.

“It’s in brilliant shape, especially for this time of summer,” Fowler said as he surveyed.

“It’s fantastic to see the care taken to present it like this.”

Entries are still available to play with legends such as Fowler, Peter Senior and Andre Stolz, to name but a few.

Legends Pro-Am entries open

Entries to play in the inaugural Barwon Cleaning Supplies Portarlington Legends Pro-Am are now open.

The event, to be held on Monday, 28 February, has already attracted a great response from some of Australia’s leading pros with legendary stars Peter Senior, Andre Stolz, Richard Green and Mike Harwood among those who’ve entered.

The day will be contested across AM and PM fields, with shotgun starts for both. Entry to the morning field is $65, with the afternoon field entry $85.

Meals will be provided for all players, with huge prize pools for the pros (stroke) and a team stableford event for the amateurs, plus a series of other great competitions throughout the day.

“The tournament is going to be fantastic with so many of the really great players we’ve all watched for years,” Port pro Matt Milne said.

“Obviously it’s our first Legends Tour event, but all the guys have heard about our great pro-ams in the past and there seems to be a really good buzz building around it already.”

Milne urged those considering being part of the day to book early to avoid disappointment.

Bookings can be made via the www.mitournament.com website already regularly in use at the club. If you haven’t logged in there previously, the easiest route to the tournament bookings page is firstly to click on Victoria in the map, then on “Portarlington Golf Club” in the “Organiser” field on the next page. This will take you to a page with both AM and PM events available.

“Come into the Pro Shop to see us if you’re having any difficulties with the process,” Milne offered.

Port’s legendary pro-am move

The inaugural Barwon Cleaning Supplies Portarlington Legends Pro-Am will be held on Monday, 28 February.

The field will contain several high-profile legends of Australian golf, with players such as Peter Senior, Andre Stolz, Mike Harwood, David McKenzie and Peter Lonard expected to take part.

Barwon Cleaning Supplies managing director Wayne Dixon was thrilled to continue his generous support of the club’s tournaments.

“Some of these guys we’ll have down to Portarlington were – and still are – household names, so I’m sure they’ll generate a lot of interest for everyone to come and watch,” Dixon said.

“And for those lucky enough to get to play, it should be a great day to see how guys who have, shall we say, a little more experience, tackle our course.”

PGA of Australia Legends Tour co-ordinator Andy Rogers welcomed the Portarlington event, the first on the tour’s 2022 calendar.

“We’re really looking forward to coming to Portarlington for the first time,” Rogers said.

“We know the club has hosted other successful pro-ams in the past and it’s a course our members I’m certain will enjoy.

“They certainly know how to play great golf and they’re always up to entertain at the same time, so we encourage all on the Bellarine Peninsula to get involved with what I’m sure will be a great day.”

Portarlington Golf Club chief executive Michael Phillips said he hoped the tournament would be the first of many to come.

“We’re certain so many of the legends who come will be names really familiar to our members and guests, so it will be a great thrill to see them up close and personal,” he said.

“If we can make the event a success, I’m sure we’ll be able to grow it in years to come, too.”

Phillips urged all members and potential event partners to get behind the tournament.

“These things really succeed when the full community rallies around them, so if you or your business wants a chance to partner with the club to host these legends, please reach out to the club as soon as you can.”
