Junior News as at January 2015
Happy New Year to all the readers of the junior news. I hope 2015 brings a lot of joy and some improvement in your golf!
Last year we had a very good season with the Junior program, which is run during the term from 9.30 to 10.30 each Sunday except for public holidays and school holidays.
The program is run by volunteers who are competent golfers and is an introduction for beginners in all aspects of the game. The volunteers have working with children checks and the activities are conducted as a group in a safe, fun environment. The cost for each child per session is $2.00 which goes toward our term break up and little prizes through the season.
Once a term our professional, Matt Milne conducts the session and guides the volunteers on appropriate activities.
Last year two scholarships were given to participants of this clinic. They were Will English and Jamie Schreuder, Will is 7 years old and Jamie is 10.
They are both on the way to getting a handicap and have the passion!! Also the temperament!!
The Portarlington primary school sent a group of 20 with the after school care program last term of 2014. All the kids who began finished, which was pleasing and there were quite a few natural golfers amongst the group. Hopefully we planted the seed. With a big group like that once again volunteers were called upon and with Marilyn Mooney, Emma Zahl and Jill Peppard ‘s expert tuition and teaching skills, we managed to survive. I think we had about 12 preps in the group.
Also many thanks to the Port golf club for supplying the Golf club bus and driver to ferry the kids to the course
At the end of last year we also were recipients of a grant of $2500 from the City Of Greater Geelong, Smarty grants program which went towards purchasing golf clubs for our junior program. As you would understand preps could hardly lift old, cut down adult clubs, let alone have a chance at hitting the ball, so these little junior sets will be a great asset to our program. Thanks to the generosity of the Geelong council for this community grant.
The “Portarlington Drysdale Lion’s club, “also donated $1600 to the Junior program specifying that this must go toward junior development, guidance or role model exposure, not equipment. I have a committee consisting of Colin Isbel, Darren Garner (they run the junior pennant for Portarlington) Jenny Edmanson, Peter Hahn and Tyson Myers to help put this funding to the best use possible.
The generosity and hard work of the Lion’s club is amazing so we thank them for their grant towards our youth at the club.
Last year I did a beginner clinic for the neighbourhood house. There was so much interest that we had to limit numbers to twelve. It was a great experience for the participants and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The sessions were for an hour and a half on a Monday morning and we covered all aspects of the game, then went in for a coffee and a chat. The neighbourhood house asked if it would be possible to have another one this year so on Monday mornings if you see a small group of beginners come and say hello as they are all very keen but are a bit daunted by golf clubs and all the protocol and rules associated with them.
Below are some photos just showing some of the kids and highlights in the junior program last year. So with that, if you want to help in any way, JUMP ON BOARD .The junior program can only improve and grow with more volunteers and if you are able to assist, please contact me on 0418 315 548
Happy Golfing!!!
