Captains Report with Alan Sweeney at 25th January 2016
Well, the rain has been a welcome sight and the course has come up a treat over these last few days.
I am pleased to say the pro-am from the amateur side of the draw is now full, however emergency places are still available, and the professional numbers are also looking good at this stage with a few more expected over the next few weeks.
Please note, the volunteers list is up on the notice board, and we would like a few more members to put their hand up to assist those that are already on the list. Any issues give me a call to discuss.
Tuesday 19th January 142 players took to the course, with Leigh Wilson taking out B Grade and the TOD with 43 points. Doug Hill won A grade, Paul Brewin C Grade and Ian Morris won D Grade. Congratulations to all winners.
Interesting point, J W Bowman (alias Mr Hollywood) won the pro pin, not only winning with a great shot, he actually birdied the hole with his brand new Scotty Cameron putter, which he said he could not use! What can I say??
Over 350 players contested the W Carlos Summer Cup over the three weeks of the event and the eventual winner with 117 points was Daniel Hopgood. Three players tied for second, Ken Paterson, Terry Powell and Ray Hazell on 114, and Jeremy Owens was two points further back on 112. Just goes to show, consistency is the key to winning big events.

151 players took to the course on Tuesday 12th January with Steven Rossi taking out his grade and TOD with plus 8, another great score.
On Saturday 189 players set out in the second round of the W Carlos Cup Summer Cup and the field is bunching up.
Shane Myers leads the field with 80 points and the first round leader Ray Hazell only two points behind. Fours players are on 77 points and a group of 6 on 76 points with one round to go, good luck to all for the final round.
The Pro-am is fast approaching and the field is filling fast, so if you are thinking of playing get your enter in as soon as you can so you don’t miss out. The volunteers list will be on the notice board Tuesday 19 January.
Although there was a few issues with the drop zones and new works around the 14th and 18th this will be resolved as soon as possible. Please check the notice boards on the pro shop wall adjacent to the toilet for further information.
Well done to the Junior Pennant side won their first game last Sunday.

Well, Christmas and New Year has passed and we are now moving into the 2016 fixture. The weather has been great and hot and as we all know we need rain.
However, the course is looking great thanks to our course superintendent and all his staff, thanks guys you do a great job.
Apart from the hot weather the golf is pretty hot also. As members will remember Matt Salter had a scorching round in December that we all thought was a course record. ….Well after I consulted Golf Victoria I am afraid we cannot award Matt with the course record as the R and A decision (not a rule of golf) say any course record must be a stroke round and played from the back marks (or as close as possible) and does not include Stableford, par or bogey. Matt sorry, but it was still a great round and your card is located in the trophy cabinet for all to see well done
Saturday January 2 was the Men’s monthly medal with 188 members playing and 29 Ladies bringing the total field to 217.
Chris McCulloch took the medal out on a count back with a net 65. Chris your medal is on order.
Alan Grainger took out the TOD on Tuesday the 5th and Darren Heaton with 42 points took out A grade, well done gents great scores.
On January 9 it was the first round of the W Carlos Summer Cup and a big field of 188 men and 31 Ladies.
Ray Hazell took the trophy of the day and is leading the Summer Cup with 43 points, although there are some good players on his tail with another two rounds to go.
We will be looking for volunteers for our Pro-Am, so look out for the list to put your name up on the noticeboard in reception.
The EJ Whitten Charity day is coming up in February - come and check out who is playing; there will be some Celebrities I am sure. Then the BIG ONE our Pro -am the field is filling fast - so if you would like to play get you entry as soon as you can.
Regards

Well, what a week of hot weather, saw the number of participants down for the week, with Tuesday being the best day with 152 players taking to the course. The warm weather did not stop some great scores with our very own CEO Ron Stockdale taking out the TOD and B Grade with a great score of plus 5, (what can I say).
Thursday another great score by Doug Hill, 44 points taking out the days event.
Saturday being the hottest day, and one member experienced some very hot golf. Matthew Salter (handicap 4) blazed round the course with a wonderful score of 47 points which relates to 65 off the stick, great score Matthew. Over the next few days I will confirm if this is a course record. As far as I am aware it is a course record, watch this space.
Also, on Saturday a brave or other wise group of 5 hit off just after midday, and playing in a five managed to get round in 4 and a half hours, although we did slow down a little on the back nine with the heat, then we were hit with a storm as we approached the 18th so it can be done, playing in fours we should be able to get around in just over four hours. The committee will keep monitoring the pace of play.
On the pace of play a recent survey by Golf Australia showed that the weighted average time for a round of golf is four hours 16 minutes. The report also showed that 84% of clubs promote ready golf, Members can find the report on the Golf Australia web site.
Well, thats all from me this side of Christmas so I wish all members and their families a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Cheers Al

Tuesday 8th December was the traditional ones Christmas Break up Day, 147 players battled it out for the trophy of the day with George Jacimovic coming out on top with 46 stable ford points, George easily won his grade, I think we may have to swab him coming in with scores like that. The day was a great success and every one enjoyed a lovely lunch and a few drinks after the round.
A special thanks to Jan Cogger and Angela Royal who looked after the cards for us so we could sit down and enjoy the afternoon.
Saturday 12 December was medal day and David Bourke took out the December Medal with a great score of nett 66 on a count back.
Numerous members have been having issues with getting on to the time sheet please note that the issue is sits with Mi Club who are currently addressing the problem.

The Jack and Pat Taylor event was a great success with 196 players competing for the top prize, Portarlington team performed really well featuring in both gross and nett events, however, the top prize went to a visiting team from Latrobe with a gross score of 60 with the runners up being the team of Ralph Carnovale, Raff Carnevale, Lee McMurrich and Robby White.
The Net winners was Shane Cahill team with Tim Benham, Richie Howells and Llyod James from Portarlington and runners-up was the team of Dean Cook, Dominic Caudullo, Neil Van OOsten and Jess Arnold.
The complete result sheet is on the link below and the website home page.
During the week, the Tuesday competition saw 143 players with some great scores, and if you could not manage 34 points you missed out on a ball, and Thursday was even harder with 35 points winning a ball.
Just a note to all members - we are getting numerous complaints about buggies arriving too close to the greens, in particular going between the 18th green and the water hazard (although this can’t be done at the moment). Please do the right thing and follow the rules in the fixture book thanks.
Also, a change to the booking access time, as we know Friday the 25 is Christmas day, might be hard to remember to get on to the system for Saturday January 2. So we have changed the access time to Thursday at 2pm.

HOLE IN ONE! Congratulations to Darrin Wilson, for achieving the perfect shot last Saturday the 28th of November - on the 17th Hole.
Eight players came down from Gisborne last Tuesday and absolutely loved the course. They also took home a couple of prizes and a NTP. They, like many visitors to our course, can’t wait to return and are a reminder to us of how lucky we are with our facilities.

Our heartiest congratulations to Scott Hopgood on putting together 2 excellent stableford rounds over the past fortnight to win the Summer Plate. Scott had 41 last week, and backed it up with a 37 to score 78 points. Unlucky runners-up were Colin Doyle and Rodney Allen, just one point behind Scott.
