Captains Report with Alan Sweeney 7th June 2016
Congratulations to Graham Vohmann for a HOLE-IN-ONE on the 2nd hole on Saturday 4th of June.
My first report for a few weeks, but better late than never. I just wish I was out there playing, even in the wet and cold, but never mind.
The 2106 Hemsworth 4BBB ball has been contested with 178 competing on both days, although only 28 on the Sunday. As this is a Board event, next year we are looking at having a block booking on the Sunday so we can finish off with a gathering of the final contestants, and maybe a presentation at the end of the day.
The winners of the 2016 Hemsworth were Jason Wilson and Todd Somaz with a great score of plus 18. Runners up two shots behind were Tom Scarff and Donald English, well done gents, great golfing.
The June Monthly Medal was won by Colin Isbel with a net 66. Colin also took out A grade, well done Colin, Gavin Whyley was in the mix with a great score of 72 off the stick for a nett 68.
The 6th round of the Mens eclectic was played on Saturday, and things are hotting up at the top with 8 players sharing the top 5 spot. With only four more rounds to go watch this space, it could be anyone’s.
To finish, the Match Committee has agreed to put in some measures in an attempt to address slow play. This will come into operation on Thursday 1 July, notices will be distributed when all the details are finalised.
Acting Captains Report with Ian McAuliffe 9th May 2016
With Alan Sweeney recovering from some medical issues, I will endeavour to fill you in with the latest goings-on amongst the men golfers at the present time.
Firstly, congratulations to Nick Bergin for his “Hole-in-one” on the 5th hole on Thursday 28th April. Nick was playing in the 11-hole comp and had only accumulated 3 points on his first 4 holes before he scored his 1 for 5! He went on to score 23 pts for the 11 holes and win the comp. Well done Nick.
The May Monthly Medal was a brilliant shoot-out between A Graders and former club champions Josh Kent and Mick Havelberg. Both played sub-par rounds to score incredible nett 66’s, Josh getting the medal on a countback.
Well done also to our mens team that went to Winchelsea on Saturday May 7th to compete for the annual Winchelsea shield. Our team, comprising Ron Peacock, Ken Foxcroft, Cliff McCorkell and Ian Flanders were victorious, bringing home the coveted shield.
The golf committee wishes to bring to everyone’s attention the club rule about mobile phones. Whilst phones may be carried by players during a competition round, the phone must be turned to silent for obvious reasons, and only used in case of emergency. Calling the Pro shop would not normally be considered an emergency!
Good golfing!
Ian
Division 3 Pennant Team at Barwon Heads last Sunday
Captains Report with Alan Sweeney, 11th April 2016
Monthly medal winner for April was Steve Miller with a great score of nett 65, Bob Stoward with a nett 66 thought it was his day, but it was not to be, never mind Bob you keep popping up to win the pro pin on a regular basis.
As mentioned in my last report, the Senior pennant season is well on the way. Unfortunately, our division one team has lost their opening three games which will make it hard for them to remain in division one. Having said that, we have the players and there is a long way to go, so with a bit of determination they could stay up in division one. The division three side have won one and lost one, so they are still in the hunt, again some grit and determination will see them up there when it counts.
Can’t say much for our two veteran sides, neither team will be featuring in the finals but we put up a good show.
Before I finish a few issues were discussed at the Match Committee meeting, and one that is worth a mention is scratching the green when moving the disc for the nearest to the pin when it interferes with your line. There is no need to mark the green, please replace the disc with a flat plastic marker and I am sure the green staff would be appreciative.
Just before closing, mens golf committeeman Bob Stoward is leaving Portarlington at the beginning of May and going back to his roots in Tasmania. I would like to thank Bob for all his good work on the Committee over this last four years, you will be missed Bob and good golfing on the Apple Isle!
Captains Report with Alan Sweeney, 23rd March 2016
Some welcome rain last Friday, but I am not sure the ladies appreciated the downpour seeing that some Ladies had to complete 36 holes.
The pennant season is now on the way and both teams were presented with their team shirts at a small gathering of the players on Thursday evening of last week. This year Melbourne Bathrooms and Kitchens are sponsoring both division one and division three teams.
Portarlington hosted the division 3 teams with Portarlington starting of the season with a bye.
Our division one side came up against a very strong 13th Beach Side, and although the score line does not look the best, all but two games were pretty close, Rob White had a great win and it was a credit to the team listed below:
Rob White, James Harvey, Sean Rogers, Micheal Havelberg, Justin McGrath, Phil Toyne and Gavin Whyley.
The guys who will represent Portarlington in division 3 are as follows, Sam Moor, Joel Launer, Darren Heaton, Brian Hazell, Stuart Anderson, Stu Olver and Max Edmanson. Also, joining the division one team is Josh Kent, and the guys will have to be on their toes to keep their place.
Keeping on pennant, our first Vets team in division one had a good win at Lonsdale, but sadly the guys in the division two side went down yet again. Hopefully, the division one guys can win all their remaining games and with a little help from the other teams, we may make the finals.
The March medal was won by Richard Hassett with a great score of a net 62, well done Richard.
Last but not least, the annual mens foursomes championships was held over the weekend, although this is a major event for the men we do not get the entries we would like for a board event. However, 10 teams completed the second round on the Sunday with the eventual winners being Gavin Whyley and Rick Edmanson, followed by Ian Flanders and Ken Foxcroft, Ian and Ken were leading all day until Gav and Rick had a great 79 off the stick late in the day. Well done to all who played.
