Where there’s a Will, there’s a Way!

Last Sunday’s Combined Stableford Competition on Sunday the 2nd of December was won by Will English, with 36 points.

Will is 11 years old and attends Portarlington Primary School. He is a member of our club and participates in our junior program led by Tyson Myers. Will is also a member of our junior pennant squad. His parents, Sam & Gary are very proud, as they should be. Congratulations Will and best wishes for your golfing future!

Speaking of success last Sunday, the team of Stan Mascoll, Joel Launer, Bill and Jack Martin came third overall, battling it out for the Barwon Plate in “cyclonic style winds” coming straight off the Southern Ocean. Jack was narrowly bumped out of runner up position by a countback ….Good job just getting out there fellas!

New Golf Committee Line-up

At the golf committee meeting on Wednesday 7th November, John W Bowman resigned from his role on the golf committee and therefore the vice captaincy of Portarlington Golf Club.

A big thank you to John for all his work for the Club in his role as Captain, Vice Captain and on various committees over the years.

News from Stawell….

Sean “Bandit ” Rodwell stole the show at Stawell Golf Club winning the B Grade Club Championships (gross) 247 (81/84/82)

“There was a 3 hole play-off in front of a rabid crowd - all juiced up in a convoy of golf carts,” according to Rodwell.

The Championship was over 3 rounds and he had to go to a ‘playoff’. His opponent - ‘Budgie’ (everyone has a nick name up there!)…. drove into the creek on the 3rd playoff hole, a par 3 so the bandit ended up winning playoff by 3 shots as a result.

Great golf course managed by volunteers and well worth a visit - with Horsham GC only 30 minutes up the road as well!

Sean’s only miss on the day was seeing ‘Large’ - (Elijah), who was apparently playing a round there recently too. Well done, Sean!

NOVEMBER MEDAL WINNER

Congratulations to Gavin Whyley on winning the November medal with an outstanding nett 67 off his handicap of 5. Well done Gav!

ANOTHER “PLANK” AWARD WINNER!

Mickey with his “Plank”
award

It’s been a while since we have been able to add to our list of Plank awards, but our resident expert engraver, Mickey McNeill teed off on the18th hole hoping to play down the 1st fairway with a draw, but unfortunatley his draw turned into a slice, with his mighty 260 metre drive landing on the roof of the clubhouse! Usually our plank hall of famers hit the new Pro shop off the 1st, but this rare shot was deemed eligible to enter the holy grail of the “Plank”!

MEN’S TUESDAY COMPETITION

As you are aware, to ensure the number of members wanting to play in the Tuesday Men’s Competition could get a game, it was decided to introduce a two tee time sheet (similar to the Saturday time sheet). However after giving consideration to the probable decrease in entrants in the colder months ahead, it was agreed that we revert to the one tee time sheet for the time being. Matt and Tyson will do their best to cater for all those who wish to play. Post winter and with the likely increase in entrants as the weather warms up, we will again investigate whether a two tee time sheet on a Tuesday will be required. Thank you for your understanding.
