PORTARLINGTON GOLF – JUNIOR PENNANT REPORT 2019
SUNDAY 20th October - Round One v. Curlewis @ Portarlington
We suffered a 1st round defeat at the hands of a more experienced Curlewis team losing 4/1.
Will English, playing his 1st game of pennant was our standout with a 5/3 victory. Jack Martin © lost 2/1, as did Bryson Nicholls.
Ella Rogers was defeated 3/2 & Will Burr, another debutant, lost 5/4.
However we were positive and we are very much in a learning curve with our players.
We enjoyed a jolly good lunch in our Bistro after the match – Thanks Bistro team!
SUNDAY 27th October – Round Two v. Lonsdale @ Queenscliff
Playing a very experienced and accomplished Lonsdale team (current premiership holder), we knew we were in for a tough game intough conditions.
Sadly we lost 4/1 but we did not go down without a fight.
Ella Rogers was 3 down after 7 holes & recovered masterly to win 2/1 – Ella never gave up and played some excellent golf to get back into game and to go on & win.
Will English was 5 down after 5 holes but with 4 to go he was within 2. He eventually lost 4/3 but he showed he is up for it.
Will Burr was also well down early but continued to fight and his tenacity took the is match to the last 3 holes.
Jack Martin & Bryson Nicholls were defeated 2/1 again!
We can see the improvement in our squad and are looking forward to success in coming weeks.
This match was played at Queenscliff due to Lonsdale course being unavailable.
Portarlington does provide every assistance and encouragement to juniors wishing to pursue golf as an alternative sport.
Thank you to Ron Howell, Angela Rogers, Phil Stephens & Ian Morris for giving up their time to provide expert caddy assistance to our players. And Arthur Johnson, Herb Picker & John W Bowman for their asistance in team mentoring & leadership.
You are proving to be great ambassadors in junior development in golf for our club.
Next match is Sunday 10th November – Round Three v. Clifton Springs @Portarlington 10.30am tee off.
