2009 Carnival of Golf WrapUp

Day 1 saw Lee James of Portarlington convincingly win the Men’s Open Championship in extremely difficult conditions with a score of 112.  After a 2 hour break due to the weather the competition was reduced to 27 holes. Shane Dobney from Latrobe won B Grade with Vello Pukk of Portarlington winning C Grade.

Day 2's Mixed 4BBB Stableford was taken out by the Mount Xavier team of Robert Storey and Rhonda Cator with 44 points (c/b) from Julie Pavletich & Peter Nash from 13th Beach & Portarlington.

Sunday night's Glow in the Dark Hole in One Shootout was a fantastic display of precise hitting with very few balls ending up in the drink!  Sue Hazell began in front but it was soon on for young and old with Peter Taylor’s crew from Nagambie taking on Sam Beeston and Elijah Wall.  The first prize of $100 was narrowly won by a beautiful shot by Elijah Wall.

Day 3's Men's 4BBB Stableford ended up with a win by Anthony McGlashan & Gabe Lanzano from Gisborne with 49 points.  Portarlington’s Gavan Pitcher and Tom Scarff came very close with 48.

Day 4's Bellarine Veterans Classic Stroke was a great tussle between playing partners Richard Froebel (a 2 time winner of this event) from Cranbourne Portarlington’s Brian Hazell.  Brian ended up ended up winning by one stroke with an 82.

Day 5 was the Men’s and Ladies Ambrose Pairs. Angela Royal made a quick new friend in Queen's Park's Judy Doherty and came out winners (68 1/8) by 1 stroke over Jenni Rusbridge(East Geelong) and Vicki Hamilton (Portar;lington) .  In The Men’s event Dave Gray and Rick Edmanson from Portarlington narrowly missed victory, being pipped at the post by half a stroke by Curlewis's John Fellows and Mick O'Flynn from Ringwood who finished on 65.

Day 6's Ladies 4BBB Victory went to Caroline Jinks and Margaret Llewellyn from Clifton Springs with a score of 45.

The Day 6 Men’s Veteran’s Stableford saw Len Timms from Portarlington winning the C Grade with 36 points, Cliff Cobbledick from Cobden winning B Grade with 39 points and Frank San Gil from Elcho Park winning A Grade with 37 points. The Perpetual trophy was won by Cliff Cobbledick.

Day 7 saw the Ladies battle each other, as well as the weather, for the Ladies Open Championship over 27 holes. Mary Menzel of Portarlington won C Grade with 156, Lorraine Smith from RAAF Williams won B Grade with 140. A Grade ended in a tie between Angela Foott of Portarlington and Heather Harley from Kooringal both on 125. The ‘sudden death’ playoff lasted three holes with victory finally going to Angela Foott.

Day 8’s Men’s Stableford saw victory in C Grade going to Alan Yeatman of Portarlington with 38 points, B Grade to Elijah Wall of Portarlington with 39 points and A Grade and the Perpetual Trophy going to Brian Kingma from Beaconhills with 40 points.

The Ladies Stableford event saw victory in B Grade going to Jenny Durante of Portarlington while A Grade and the Perpetual Trophy was taken out (again) by Val Bibby from Portarlington / Queenscliff.

Day 9 saw the Carnival wind up with a Mixed Canadian event - a good day during which even the weather, although threatening, was kind to us. Portarlington’s own John & Jacky Rowe took out the Gross event with an 80 while the Nett event went to Mick & Maxine O’Flynn from Ringwood with 68 7/8.

A big thank you to all the players both local and visiting for your very valuable contributions to another very successful Carnival. Planning is already underway for a bigger and better Carnival for 2010.
